What Are Shrines?
Shrines in VV: Ultimatum are build-making tools - hidden interactive locations, usually tied to questlines, that let you reset, upgrade, or trade resources for your character build.
Shrines are VV: Ultimatum's answer to build customization outside the skill trees: interactive locations scattered around the world that modify your character in ways nothing else can. Community documentation defines them simply as build-making tools that are often tied to questlines - you rarely just walk up to one, and most require multi-step quests, boss kills, or hidden interactions to access.
Three shrines are documented so far, each with a distinct role. The Refund Shrine completely resets a single skill and refunds its skill points, unlocked through the 'Statue Mystery' quest and three boss-and-tutorial extracts. The Upgrade Shrine grants a single skill two free levels without spending skill points or ascension fragments, gated behind an Everwhite Enclave questline that runs through two boss fights. The Sacrifice Shrine, hidden in Hueco Mundo's cave, exchanges monster parts for rewards - its documentation is still at a placeholder stage.
A shared warning applies to the documented shrines: the Refund and Upgrade Shrines are explicitly once per character, so the choice of which skill to reset or boost is permanent for that character slot. Plan around your endgame build before spending either use, and expect additional shrines or rule changes as documentation matures - details are subject to change per current documentation.

Are shrines reusable?
The Refund and Upgrade Shrines are explicitly one-time-use per character. The Sacrifice Shrine's usage rules are not yet documented.
